DIY TIPS
The best thing that you can do in order to get rid of your problems is to call a handyman to do the job you simply can't do. However, there are times that you really need to do it on your own while the person on call is still on his way. Or better yet, you should know some simple tasks to help you spend less and save more.
It is always good to be prepared by knowing the basics of the chores that you usually delegate to others. Here are some simple tips that might help you:
Repairing a hole
This task may be too simple but sometimes gives you a headache on how to really fix this problem. Most often than not, holes are just too large to apply a surfacing compound and in the same way too small for a conventional plaster patch. So the first thing that you have to do is to fill the hole with an old newspaper. After you have filled the hole, it is now the right time to apply a surfacing compound. You can immediately fix the hole in just a dew minutes.
Dealing with small nails
It is okay to nail big nails. But if you try to nail a small nail, then that could be a problem. You might be thinking that you would just end up pounding your own fingers instead of the nails. To solve this problem, you can use the teeth of the comb to hold the small nail. In this way, you can already secure your fingers from any unwanted accidents.
Smoothing the table drawer
It could sometimes irritate you to open your drawers with difficulty because such would not run smoothly. What you need to do in order to solve this problem is to apply candle wax on or you may use some lubricants to smoothen the runners of your drawer.
Tightening loose wall screws
You can tighten up the loose wall screws by simply using a toothpick or a wooden matchstick. Insert them in the wall plug and then screw the loose screws until it is already tight.
Choosing the right paint colour
Sometimes, you need to touch up the damaged portion of your walls with paint. However, if you are not sure of the exact shade of your wall's paint, take a small sample from wall. Let the paint merchant see the sample and do the matching of the colour for you.
Sanding wood
You can either do the hand sanding or with the use of a belt sander. The trick is to do the sanding with the grain to give you a good finish.
Measurements on length
In order to guarantee the correct measurement, only use clean and undistorted measuring instruments. Even a single millimetre could cause significant change if not done appropriately.
Drilling
This kind of job could be really messy because of the dust it creates. In order to regulate the mess, you can use an envelope and place it underneath the hole to collect the dust. You can also cover the floor underneath the hole you are drilling.
Removing paint from glass window
You can remove the stains on your window with the use of a razor blade. You should wet the window first and then use the blade to remove the paint. Repeat the procedure if necessary. Remember to always rinse the blade before using.
Storing paint brush
It could be a problem when the paint brush dries after you use it. In order to avoid this from happening, wrap the brush with a plastic bag, squeeze out the air and make sure that there is no chance for the air to get to it. If there is no air, then the paint won't certainly dry.
Reducing paint odours
This could be a problem for newly painted house. In order to reduce this foul odour, you can place white vinegar in a small dish inside the room. It will somehow neutralise the odour.
